CultureStrike

A had a chat with one of my friends who is an artist and she recommended checking out CultureStrike as they are an organization that highlights artivism. I don’t know if I would of necessarily found this by just doing my own searching, so thank you Freda! According to their website,
“CultureStrike empowers artists to dream big, disrupt the status quo, and envision a truly just world rooted in shared humanity. As risk-takers with the creative audacity to think beyond today’s boxes, artists play a powerful role in inciting conversations, inventing new ways of thinking, and redefining the limits of what’s possible. That’s why we believe cultural work is key to creating systemic change.” What I found interesting about CultureStrike is that they have certain projects that they have and continue to work on. One such project is Artists vs. Walmart, that was released in November 2014 and highlights Walmart’s greed and treatment of their workers. They describe this project as being in solidarity with the employees of Walmart. I also found it interesting that they use tumblr as a platform to post this art like the screen shot that is posted before. I like how with the arts post, the also post information about who in artist is and the artist’s statement about the piece.

One of the reasons why I am glad that I stumbled across CultureStrike is that they are an artist network, where they support and connect artists to new opportunities to share their work. CultureStrike. Under the section on their website where they talk about there focuses, one of the focuses listed is:

Cultivating Artists
Our work prioritizes sustaining migrant, women, queer, trans artists and artists of color with the opportunities and resources needed to do what they do best, whether they’re writers, filmmakers, musicians, performers, visual artists, or work across media. We also challenge artists to consider how their work can be part of something bigger, sparking relationships among artists and with youth, organizers, educators, and movement leaders.

I think this really speaks to how this organization works to create network around artists and how their artwork can be part of a bigger picture. It seems that in my research thus far, I have come across many organizations that use the interest as a way to research out to artists and create a community, in which artists revolve around artivism.
