Artivism in the Digital Age

Hello! Welcome! My name is Ashley and I am a graduate student studying Library and Information Studies at the University of Arizona. I also work at the UA libraries full-time. As an information professional, I am greatly interested in the way that digital technologies shape our world, and it will be exciting to learn more about different digital cultures on the internet. This is a space where I will be exploring the concept of “artivism.” Nope, I was not a typo. Artivism is a concept that combines art and activism. It defines art that is created for the purpose of activism. For my blog assignment I am interested in exploring “artivism” and its presence in the digital age. I am interested in looking at and finding information about how art and activism collectively has transformed with the internet, especially with the growth of social media. I am also interested in looking at the scholarship that relates to artivism and the history behind using art as a tool for activism. I think I will start this project by looking at the history of artivism and from there transition into its presence on the internet.
